Clare Fellow, David Rowitch, co-leads breakthrough MS study
Fellow of Clare College and Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Professor David Rowitch, has recently published a study which identifies brain cells particularly vulnerable to damage in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS).
The international study from the University of Cambridge, Heidelberg University and the University of California, San Francisco, could be vital in establishing new therapies and treatments for MS, which affects more than 100,000 people in the UK.
In a statement, Professor Rowitch, who was the study's senior scientist, said "We found that antibody-producing immune cells are related to the damage of the important projection neurons in MS brains. This suggests that cell therapies targeting these immune cells could protect projection neurons and provide a novel treatment for progressive MS."
