Dr Roger Schofield 1937-2019
The College is sad to report the death of Dr Roger Schofield at the age of 81. Roger was elected a Fellow of Clare in 1969, and was Director of the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure.
In 1989 he co-authored The Population History of England 1541-1871, which the Times Higher Education Supplement Review described as "important, not only to English historians, but to students of population in other countries as well. As a result, the study of the economic history of all European countries before the late nineteenth century will never be quite the same again."
After his retirement, he began work at cataloguing the Fellows’ Library at Clare.
As a resident Fellow of Clare over many years, Roger was a source of great warmth and cheery good humour to the college community at large.
In his role as Director of Studies, he was an inspiration to many generations of undergraduate and graduate historians in the college and beyond, opening up new perspectives on how history might be studied, often over a congenial glass of wine in his college rooms. Roger was one of the College's youngest Fellows during the 1970s, and over that decade was particularly instrumental in helping Clare to make the change from a traditional men's College to one in which young women and undergraduates from a wider variety of backgrounds could feel at home.
