Eric Lane Visiting Fellowship - Apply Now
The Eric Lane Visiting Fellowship was established to allow someone working in a field which advances peace and social harmony to reside for an 8-week term at Clare College, Cambridge, with full living expenses paid.
The purpose is to give someone who is not currently working in a formal academic context a period of time for study and reflection, and reading or writing in a way which might enrich their work in the future, and to interact with staff and students in Cambridge, at Clare and beyond. The terms “peace and social harmony” are intentionally broad, and it has been decided that for the next round there should be no restrictions of any kind placed on disciplines or areas of work/practice. Previous holders of the Fellowship have been extremely diverse, ranging from senior figures in charities and foundations to young professionals helping asylum seekers navigate their way through complex bureaucracies. They have been engaged in varied kinds of work from prison governorship to reconciliation in the former Yugoslavia and with peacebuilding in the Middle East. The Fellow should be, or have recently been, directly involved in such work.
Clare College is one of the colleges of Cambridge University, with around 700 students and 100 Fellows across a very wide range of academic disciplines. The Eric Lane Visiting Fellow shares in the social life of the Senior Combination Room, and indeed the College, which has a reputation for friendliness. The Fellow will have many opportunities for informal contact and exchange of views, with Fellows, undergraduates and graduate students of the College and beyond. If willing, the Fellow may be asked to give informal talks or seminars to interested groups in the College or relevant Faculty, or be interviewed for a College publication. The Fellow will have access to the University Library and necessary computing facilities. As well as the full round of collegiate life, introductions can be made to other faculties and research institutes in Cambridge University.
The intended dates of the 2018 Fellowship are from 16th January-16th March 2018. Accommodation and meals (full board) in College are provided, and the cost of travel to and from Cambridge will be reimbursed. If requested by the successful candidate’s employer, there is the possibility of a modest scholarship of up to £5000 to cover costs relating to their absence from work.
